Each of the regional Branches arranges for its members a series of scientific lectures and one or more visits to places of scientific and technical or general interest. In addition they arrange talks and demonstrations for school pupils and one social event, usually a dinner to which members' spouses are invited.
The lecture meetings and visits the Branches have link with local schools, to encourage pupils and to support teachers of physics. Several Branches give annual prizes as well.
Members of the Institute of Physics living in the British Isles are automatically allocated to their first Branch based on the postcode of their mailing address.
Members outside the British Isles may choose to belong to one or two Branches; members within the British Isles may choose to belong to a second Branch. Email membership@iop.org for further information.
