Annual Review 2007

Each year the annual review gives us the opportunity to look back at what we have done over the past 12 months to work towards achieving our mission to promote physics and support physicists.

In 2007, the Institute of Physics extended its reach by carrying forward the 2006 implementation strategy. This enabled us to expand the range of services that we offer and the audiences that we address. In what was a good year for physics, the Institute stepped up its outreach and communication and also its business and educational opportunities; which resulted in a membership growth of more than 3%, to 35 000 members.

The annual review also gives us an opportunity to highlight significant developments and achievements within the Institute, including:

  • a 50% increase in one-to-one career guidance sessions
  • a new type of degree (integrated sciences) was launched at four universities across the UK
  • the physics in a field team attracted more than 10 000 people during their summer tour
  • extensive participation from national and regional officers (NROs) in regional STEM advisory panels and forums, careers fairs and science networks
  • the launch of IOPScience, a unique platform for IOP-hosted journal content; containing more than 300 000 articles, dating from 1874 to the present
