About Us

SASP Regional Advisor (Physics or Chemistry)

In the autumn of 2007 three training providers, Edge Hill, Keele and Brighton will be piloting the Science Additional Specialism Programme (SASP), a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme and associated accreditation to enhance existing competent science teachers’ knowledge of physics and chemistry. The pilot will last for two years; in year one the target is for 75 particpants with the same number in year 2.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) are developing an enhanced programme of subject centred support, including light-touch mentoring, to provide additional ongoing help for course participants.  The mentor support would come from local specialists, supplemented by access to additional subject resources and local and national meetings of all participants. It is envisaged that this enhanced support would start while participants were on the courses and would be available for the two years afterwards.

The subject-centred support programme would meet the following aims:

  • provision of guidance in putting learning into practice through a range of contexts and their own school environment over a significant period of time
  • ensuring that participants are inculcated into the various physics/chemistry support networks
  • enabling participants to demonstrate and develop sustained good practice in their second specialism.

The IOP and RSC wish to appoint a number of qualified persons to support the course participants in either physics or chemistry.  We would like to make the appointments as soon as possible, or by February 2008.

Posts are available in the following areas:

Physics: Brighton, Keele, Ormskirk (EdgeHill University)

Chemistry: Brighton

All RAs will report to the SASP Enhancement Manager, based at the IOP Headquarters in London, who will be responsible for overseeing the team, organising national events for the participants, working with the RAs to oversee local events. The manager will have an assistant, the Project Development Officer, to help with the day to day running of the programme, who will also support the RAs administratively.

Financial Benefits

SASP Regional Advisors will be paid £7,000 for one 7-hour day per week.  Those appointed will be paid as consultants and will not be employed by either the IOP or RSC.  Payment will be made through the IOP or RSC payroll as appropriate.

There will be access to funds to cover travel expenses for themselves and incidental expenses for the setting up of local training events.

SASP Regional Advisors will be appointed on one-year agreements which will be renewable, subject to review.  The expected minimum length of any agreements will be two years.
