Stimulating Physics Programme: Teacher Fellowship Scheme

Stimulating Physics

(Secondments will be available in all English university physics departments for qualified/specialist physics teachers in English schools and FE colleges).

The Institute have been funded by The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to deliver the Stimulating Physics Programme, which aims to increase the demand for physics at both school and university level. There are a number of projects within the scheme ranging from a new interdisciplinary science degree to e-mentoring in schools.

One project in particular, the teacher fellowship scheme, aims to ease the transition between school and university physics. The project allows appropriately qualified specialist physics teachers based at schools and FE colleges in England, to be seconded to their local university physics department on a part-time basis for an academic year. During this time teachers will be asked to fulfil a number of objectives ranging from advising the department on widening participation and recruitment issues, to delivering undergraduate lectures, seminars or practicals to enrich your knowledge base and develop your teaching back at school. The opportunity allows the university to become more aware of the capabilities of incoming undergraduates as well as the teacher undertaking an important and valuable piece of CPD.

Secondments are available at all physics departments in England (due to HEFCE being our funders, we are currently unable to provide fellowships in Wales, Scotland or Ireland).  Part-time secondments start at two days per week for an academic year with the option to work up to full-time for a year at your chosen HEI. You will continue to be paid your normal salary from your school/FE college, with us reimbursing your employer for a replacement tutor on the days you are on the secondment. We will open applications to the scheme from October 2007 for a September 2008 start.

Applications are via CV only and must include a cover letter stating how you would aim to fulfil the objectives of the fellowship (please refer to the further information document for the fellowship scheme aims).  General queries and completed CV/cover letters should be sent directly to Victoria Adrienne, Stimulating Physics Programme Manager (Access) on victoria.adrienne@iop.org  by 14 of January 2008 with interviews taking place in late January/early February.  Please refer to the further information document for more on the teacher fellowship scheme.
