History
The Council of the Institute, recognising the importance of the application of physics in industry, introduced in 1981 a new award to be named after the founder of the GEC Research Laboratories, Sir Clifford Paterson, President of the Institute 1937-39.  It is intended to encourage younger physicists.

Terms
The award shall be made for distinguished research in applied physics. This award is intended to recognise physicists early in their careers. The medal will be bronze and will be accompanied by a prize of £2000 and a certificate.
