The Physics in Finance Group focuses on the application of mathematical, computational and analytical techniques to finance. We also aim to promote the synergy between the methods of Physics and their application to finance.
The Group brings together market practitioners, academics from all disciplines and the many physicists now working in these fields. The Group committee includes members drawn from financial institutions, universities, government bodies and other commercial organisations.
Benefits of joining the Group include:
*A friendly forum for discussion and information exchange;
An extensive programme of Group seminars, talks, workshops and conferences: recent subjects have included Real Options, Extreme Value Statistics, the distribution of wealth and stockmarket fluctuations, and Weather Derivatives
* Increased business relations and contacts through networking at Group activities.
The Group also aims to appeal to the significant number of physicists who take up careers in the financial sector.This is a sector with growing appeal for many postgraduate physics students. The financial sector is particularly suited to physics graduates who have the advantage of being highly numerate, computer-literate, practical problem-solvers with a wide technical knowledge.
The group sets out to appeal to two main areas where physicists could be working:
a. Quantitative Finance, for example dealing with risk management and financial products, such as derivatives and options, where sophisticated analysis is required. This is an area where PhDs in theoretical physics are in particular demand.
b. Financial management of projects where there is a large technical content as in some areas of project finance, venture capital etc.
