Former chair awarded MBE

Ann Marks

Ann Marks has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for ‘services to physics’.

Ann was chair of the Women in Physics Group from 2003 to 2006, representing the group on the Diversity Committee and served two years on the Group Co-ordination Committee. She now represents the group on the Standing Committee on Policy of the European Platform of Women Scientists.

Until recently she was the chair of the Merseyside Branch and now is a member of the Institute’s Council, representing the Nations and Regions Board.

Ann’s background is in physics teaching and after many years experience in Merseyside schools she now works freelance as a Physics Education Consultant. She held the position of an IOP, Physics Teacher Network Co-ordinator, with responsibility for Merseyside for three years. At present one of her roles is as a consultant to the University of Sheffield, Department of Physics and Astronomy, developing the Physicists and Primary Schools website materials.

Ann is keen to increase the interest of young people in physics. As chair of WIPG, she therefore raised the HSBC sponsorship to set up the WIPG Very Early Career Award in order to provide a series of excellent role models.  Having been an officer throughout an exciting period of development for WIPG, Ann is at present co-opted back on to the committee as past chair.
