Workshop on Dielectric Ageing

Dielectric materials constitute a critical element of devices ranging in size from supergrid transformers to field effect transistors and for these devices to function reliably for extended periods of time, it essential that the dielectric elements within them do not degrade. Consequently, the topic of ageing of dielectrics is of academic interest and of critical importance to many industrial sectors. This workshop sets out to examine this topic in a format that aims to promote discussion, with the aim of defining the current state of the art.
This workshop, which will be held at the Guildhall, Winchester on 8 July 2007, will precede ICSD2007. It follows on from a successful event held in Autrans, France, in June 2005.
Objectives
The objectives of the workshop are to answer two questions:
- What is our current state of knowledge concerning ageing processes in dielectrics?
- What needs to be done to advance this topic?
This will be achieved in three phases.
Phase 1 - In Advance of the Workshop
Workshop attendees will be invited to make a contribution in the form of a short statement with supporting evidence. These will be posted here nearer the event to enable all workshop participants to consider them in advance of the workshop and submit questions and comments that will, similarly, be posted here.

From the extended abstracts, a small number will be selected to be presented as 3-5 min short contributions.

Each technical session begins with reviews of key aspects of the field, presented by leading researchers in the area, to provide some context for the rest of the session. This is followed by a sequence of short contributions, finally, discussion of the topics, led by the session rapporteur.
Phase 3 - Outcomes
We intend that the workshop should generate agreed statements of what constitutes the current state of knowledge, where disagreement exists, where and what further work is necessary, and how these issues may be addressed. This will be posted on the workshop web site, again courtesy of the Institute of Physics Dielectrics Group, and written up by the workshop organizers and rapporteurs for publication in IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine. In this way, the workshop will have a tangible outcome, which will help drive future agenda to advance the field both scientifically and in terms of engineering practice.
