MTP Group Newsletter November 2007

1. Welcome

This is the second newsletter of the IoP Mathematical and Theoretical Physics Group in 2007. Its main purposes are to announce the AGM to be held at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge on 12 December 2007, to advertise details of the bursary scheme that the IoP will be operating from next year, and to inform about recent and future meetings.

2.  Announcement of meetings organised by the group

The final event supported by the group this year is the workshop Integrability and the Gauge/String Correspondence at the Isaac Newton Institute, December 10th – 14th. The deadline for applications to attend the workshop has now passed; however, note that most seminars at the Institute are open to all and that for short visits of up to two days no registration is required (unlike for longer-term participation in programmes or workshops).

Future programme:

The programme of group events for 2008 is still being planned. So far we have decided to organise one workshop in “Fundamental Physics” in Spring 2008, and we will be discussing other proposals at our next committee meeting in December. If there is a topic that you think is suitable for a half- or one-day meeting that you either would like the group to organise, or that you would like to organise yourself under the aegis of the group, please get in touch with one of the committee members at your earliest convenience.

The group is also sponsoring the conference QG2 2008 - Quantum Geometry and Quantum Gravity Conference to be held in Nottingham from June 30th to July 4th 2008.

For more details click here.

3.  Announcements of other meetings of interest to group members.

Programme at the Isaac Newton Institute

From January, there will be a six-month programme on Combinatorics and Statistical Mechanics which includes several workshops, for example:

  • Markov chain Monte Carlo Methods (25 – 28 March),
  • Combinatorial Identities and their Applications in Statistical Mechanics (7 – 11 April), and
  • Statistical-Mechanics and Quantum-Field-Theory Methods in Combinatorial Enumeration (21 – 25 April).

These are now open for registration but the deadline for the first two is very close. For details click here.

As mentioned before, most seminars at the Institute are open to all and for short visits of up to two days no registration is required, however registration or invitation is usually required for longer-term participation in programmes or workshops.

4.  The group recently organised or supported the following events:

  • Workshop on Mathematical Virology, ICMS Edinburgh, 6-10 August 2007, also sponsored by the ICMS, the COB (Company of Biologists) and various industrial sponsors (Beckman, BIAcore, Dionex and Horiba Jovin). The contribution of the IOP was used to sponsor the invited talks of prominent Mathematical Physicists who discussed applications of group theory in the context of Mathematical Virology.

5. Bursary scheme

We have run our own group bursary scheme this year, but from January this will be replaced by the new IoP “Research Student Conference Fund”. Research students who are members of the group can still apply for funds to attend conferences, as before, but the applications are now being handled centrally by the IoP. The first deadline for applications is January 1st 2008; for more click here.

6. Forthcoming AGM

The AGM will be held at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge on Wednesday, December 12th 2007, 1.30-2.00 pm – please see the enclosed announcement for details. Nominations are invited for the positions of Chair, Honorary Secretary and for three ordinary committee members. Nominations should be proposed by at least two members of the group and be accompanied by the consent of the nominee. Nominations and consent may be sent by either email or mail to the Acting Secretary (see details at the end of the newsletter).

7.  Calls for proposals

The Mathematical and Theoretical Physics Group organises scientific meetings and occasionally other activities of interest to its members. The committee always welcomes suggestions of topics for meetings; people interested in organising a meeting or who would like to suggest a topic suitable for a meeting are invited to contact the Honorary Secretary (Dr Uwe Grimm, u.grimm@physics.org). The group supports around six meetings a year on average.

The Mathematical and Theoretical Physics Group also supports travel for research students through the IOP “Research Student Conference Fund” – please see item 5 for details.
