The Toppan Printing group is one of the largest printing groups in the world, and its business fields, although all related to printing in some way, are numerous and varied.  Amongst its accolades, Toppan is well renowned for its highly sophisticated colour management systems which ensure faithful colour reproduction, not only in publications printing but in other areas such as displays and digital archiving.  The gift of a spectrodensitometer was therefore a very fitting one, and one which MD Masafumi Ozawa hopes will encourage the development of new procedures and technologies in this field.

Dr. Philip Green, Reader in Colour Imaging at the School commented that the spectrodensitometer would be an important addition to their metrology resources, owing to its high repeatability and traceable accuracy.  “For projects where we are investigating phenomena with small colour changes (such as a current project on the change in colour of ink jet media after printing), these are critical attributes.”

Colour Imaging is a research and postgraduate area in the School of Printing and Publishing at LCC. Focusing on the science and technology of colour imaging, they have one of the best-equipped University-sector colour science laboratories in the world, and conduct research in many aspects of colour management, colour appearance and graphic arts technology. They offer postgraduate study and research programmes at Diploma, MSc and PhD level.

Dean of School Sue Pandit spoke of how essential industry support is to the school. “We are so grateful for the interest shown by companies like Toppan, and indeed the school can’t survive without this sort of assistance.  Although financial support is also gratefully received, the donation of equipment by renowned companies in the industry is key to providing our students with the tools they need for education and research.”

The relationship between the School of Printing and Publishing and Toppan UK has been cultivated through the Printing and Graphic Sciences Group of the Institute of Physics, of which both Mr. Shepherd and Dr. Green are members.
