For a number of years the Institute has had a programme for assisting physicists in central and eastern Europe, working with physical societies in these countries.
The Institute has sponsored a group of physics teachers from the UK to establish facilities for physics teaching in Rwanda, with particular regard to physics practical. It is now funding a facility for the production of physics practical equipment in Kigali and sponsoring a follow up visit by UK physics teachers.
Following an initiative developed at the World Conference on Physics and Sustainable Development (WCPSD), the Institute agreed to run a workshop on Economic Development for physicists in developing countries. This was held at Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, from 27 November – 1 December 2006.
Due to an overwhelming response, a second workshop has been planned in March 2008. For further details please visit http://users.ictp.it/~smr1996/
Another development from the WCPSD was the findings of a workshop looking into mobile science education programmes. The result of this workshop led to the Institute setting up the Web site www.mobilescience.info with the aim of involving those in mobile science around the world to participate in, and share ideas relating to, mobile science outreach programmes.
The Institute provides free or low cost access to its online journals through collaborations with ICTP, the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, the Electronic Information for Libraries (eIFL) programme and the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI). Full details are available on the journals webpages.
