The Institute of Physics is a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and education in the science of physics, pure and applied.

Although the majority of Institute members live and work in the UK and Ireland, a significant proportion live and work in other countries around the world. The Institute has close relations with other physical societies. The Institute does not compete with other physical societies in their home territories, but works with them to strengthen the role of physical societies generally.

The Institute is a major player in European and international organisations in physics and physics-related areas. The aim is not just to represent the British and Irish physicists in these organisations, but also to help these organisations work effectively for the benefit of physics and physicists worldwide.

The Institute has a programme for assisting physicists in central and eastern Europe and has now established a programme in support of physics in developing countries, with a particular aim of using physics for development.
