Profile for Physics

Media Profile

Getting exciting physics stories into the media is a crucial part of the initiative. Science stories dealing with biologically-based topics such as the Human Genome Project predominate in the media and it is important for physics to demonstrate its role as the enabling technology behind this and the many other developments in medicine and the life sciences.

The Institute has, in its learned journals and popular magazines a wealth of stories on physics innovation. The Institute has been working closely with journal authors and editors to identify research papers that describe physics applications that may be of interest to non-scientific audiences.

In addition, the Institute's Groups and Branches have been active in identifying promising material from their programmes, as well as seeking leading-page research reported in the Institute's journals.

A regular programme of media releases is sent to over 150 journalists, both specialist science reporters and general writers. Posting the releases on bulletin board websites such as AlphaGalileo, the journalists' website run by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, takes the Institute's messages to a further 350 or so journalists world-wide who have registered an interest in receiving physics stories.
